As genetically engineered organisms “designed” as computer components are enrolled into environmental becomings of remediation, and our wild fantasies of (micro)bio-analytics generating lively capital proliferate, technoenvironmental entanglements and their political fictions are invoking practices at a worldmaking scale. Envirocomputing and its production of new ecological arrangements stretches far out beyond the lab –exploiting intensively the lively labours and frictions of nonhuman animals and organisms through ever-accelerating affective, semiotic and material practices. Our co-compositions/becoming-with both the internet and other digital informational networks and/or devices are ever more entangled strongly in our situated nonlocal “we”s. These scenes exploit nonhuman organisms to sustain particular modes of living, however these exploitations also create opportunities for reparations and for creative contestation–provoking an urgency to queer the how-tos! Our collective challenge is that queer technoscience is nowhere near queer enough as a research practice and needs some anthronormativies radically taken apart from itself.

In a one-day workshop, we will gather temporarily to wonder together about the potential queer analytics of microbial, animal, plant, mineral, cosmological technoscience, situating ourselves in these mundane and alluring scenes– as an invitation to consider these labours and imagine a collective life otherwise. We will ponder the possibilities and limitation of informatics; and will take seriously the affective forces of nonhuman animals and machines. We ask how might we extend queer theories that concern personal injury into more- than- human ensembles in order to consider the damages shared by humans and nonhumans? How can we generate ways that take us beyond reparative narratives or benevolent utopianism towards more-than-human life?

We look to provide ourselves with a queer “doing” within sinister computed environments and instead of focusing on a co-flourishing of humans and nonhumans, we propose that we might pay attention to the damage, injury, harms and constraints placed on the possibilities of life and brought about through informatics/technosciences. If we focus on a genealogy of injury in queer studies, can we recognise a willingness to investigate darker aspects of experience? How might we reroute the frictions of queering technoscience as something that engages with the powerful negativity of queer as a form of punk politics rather than an established boundary or focus on sex practices of ontologically secure essentially fixed bodies . This workshop is hence proposed as a collective how-to composition for partially reparative research – without guarantee!! . Absolutely dependant on the harms and methodological difficulties that each participant brings with her.

* Transgenic Living Sensor Fish

On the printed news pages of a Hong Kong newspaper, thousands of glowing rice fish, appear to illuminate the green waters of Victoria harbour in a spectacular display. The headline of the article, reads “Harbour Dirty, Fish Illuminate”. The news report tells the story of a dirty harbour polluted by Chinese industry, illuminated by the trails of glowing genetically engineered fish. This is the harbour famous around the world for the light show that takes place every night for tourists. Skyscrapers that line the harbour are illuminated in changing patterns that imply they can communicate with one another, and the lights and laser patterns are reflected in the surface of the water. The newspaper's ink-soaked pages depict water-level constellations of green fluorescent light, spreading outwards from the skyscrapers of Hong Kong’s financial district, in a shimmering pattern that appears on the waterfront. In this toxic light show as petrochemicals from the industries and production of Guanzong province circulate through the Hong Kong basin, they appear, fleetingly, as glowing traces, illuminated by the bodies of transgenic fish as they glow in response to the presence of the chemicals. In this scene, toxicity is an interruption, a disturbance, that forges new relations and disorganizes accustomed ways of being.

GFP Medaka as a diffractive figure, through which toxicity, feminist theory, computation and toxicity are parsed. Engineered as a living environmental sensor the GFP Medaka has been patented to “make” determinate the presence of estrogenic endocrine (hormone) disruptors (EEDs) in marine water, fresh water, food, and cosmetics. In the presence of estrogen, the transgenic Medaka fish express a modified gene and synthesise green fluorescent protein in their liver–-and the intensity of this fluorescence is measured by executing an algorithm that counts the brightness of the pixels when the fish are viewed under a microscope. As the GFP Medaka in the pipet swim towards the solution in the wells, or they emit an excited fluorescent glow, as the light from the microscope passes through them, my engagements with them seem to illuminate their enduring liveliness of suffering.

Permaculture visions in which fish filter the water for plants
- which are the agents implied? alive or not, human or not, powerful or powerless microbes such as bacterias or algae, waste managers, oil spill cleanup workers, other nonhumans also at risk of toxicity from these scenes such as plants, marine life etc, at risk human workers, human residents in these scenes, network infrastructures, software, servers, clouds, silicon, chips, sensor labs - hi tech, life INC, workers in the global south.
- wheres? spatiality / situatedness / displacements / distribution: global south component production, chip production in sensor labs clean rooms, toxic scenes landfill, mining waste, spill sites and their distributions globally. Monitoring or remediation takes sites at places where government/corporations/those with resources demarcate human/nonhuman others as needing protection.
- whens? temporality / durability / existing / extinct / repeated: crisis crisis crisis, post drill, post spill , post kill.
- semiotic-materialities: what signs and matters are at work in this ensemble? Toxic for some but not others, protection for some but not others, sometimes anthocentrism, benavolence, imaginaries of environmental protection, electrons, proteins, minerals, endocrines, bodily processes, contaminants, PCBS, chemical infrastrucures, gender panic.

Hereby some ensembles that gather damage in different modes:

* Transgenic fish (Helen)

How we might engage with the processes of damage and being damaged that we were experiencing, witnessing, feeling out, touching on in our practices but also how we might be in conversations with others who were dealing with damage, injury, repair, restoration, composting, speculating, in ways that could hold the damage rather than try to smooth it out, remedy it, hide it, in process of collective reparation.

Last summer there was a powerful leap towards the potential of turning damage analysis into a queer methodology.

But first perhaps it's fair to explain ourselves what we find urgent in those elements, so:

- Damage - We would like to widen the notion of damage and identify its conditions and surrounding through examples, practices things we come into contact with, and by damage we mean things like: pain, suffering, injury, uselessness, unrevoerability, unreparability, homophobia, racism, ageism, ableims, specism, classism, exclusions, inclusions, // No tienen por qué ser daños experimentados personalmente: pueden ser daños observados, o daños colectivos. Puede ser daño corporal, daño comunitario, daño medioambiental, daño personal, daño histórico, daño público, daño ficticio, daño cultural, daño de archivo, daño estructural, daño naturalizado, daño informático, daño urbano, daño trangeneracional, daño geopolítico... etc. Also we are interestedin how to make practuces that damage .. such as damaging institutions, damaging power structures, damaging fossil fuel economies. --- basically we might have to fuck some shitup.. on the way to repair. but that even with damage sometimes fucking shit up can seem difficult..

- Queering [we tell our aneqdote of last time we were in hangar] - what does it mean? non-identitary, non-essentialist, non-fixed lives // trans*feminist approach: interesctional, not-only-human, antinormative, affirmative...

(partial) Reparation - We want to propose perhaps that we can have some partial hopes to repair some damages but not others, or to live with damage in ways that give comfort and care
The semiotic-material lives to which damage happens are complex entanglements. Reparation is not taken here as a developmentalist move nor a progressist tecnique to keep complexity up and healthy and sharpened no matterhow, but as as basic gesture of trying to organize a togetherness that counts.

Queering Methodologies -- Methodologies: Focus on how we generate data, knowledge, stories, as part of feminist research practices.. Although we are aware that we are a diverse group in which each person's practice might evoke different definitions of method. In other words, how can we, as Octavia Butler might say,
uphold a politics of queer survival?

Analytics (discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data) : post-positive move. A shared word, but many ways to approach that. If you search for analytics online you come across thousands of corporate companies who offer analytical services, services that draw conclusions through running algorithms over data sets, and we feel it is urgent to reclaim analytics in non profit experiments and in processes that might give space to other ways of understanding data, art practice, movement, bodies, thinking with other species, or different types of computation. We can reclaim analytics as the practice of cutting complexity together apart. To take on the both the injuries caused by analytics and how they are instrumentalised to provide (situated, temporary) truths about lives living the possible ways of living and also to take on how we might invent/generate/build on an analytics for trans-femisnit work that stays with damage... //
